EXPLORING WA’S BEST 4WDING TRACKS SOUTH OF PERTH – GRAHAM CAHILL’S TOP 4 RECCOMENDATIONS
Article 1 of 3
As summed up by WA local Graham Cahill, Western Australia is ‘the 4WDers paradise.’ You can take Graham at his word – as part of the team at 4WD 24/7, Graham Cahill is one of Australia’s most experienced and well known 4WDers.
Exploring Western Australia leaves you spoilt for choice, from pristine beaches and massive rock climbs, to historic stock routes and of course where Graham is right at home- miles and miles of remote wilderness . WA takes up more than 30% of Australia’s land mass, so to narrow it down we caught up with Graham to find out his favourite tracks. In this post, we cover off on Graham’s favourite tracks south of Perth.
Three Bears Track
To kick it off with Graham’s local area, we’ve got the Three Bears Track. This scores itself as one of Graham’s favourite coastal tracks to explore with his furry best mate. Although you won’t find any bears, you will find some rocky terrain which is worth a crack, and spectacular coastline which winds along the cliffs to the South of Yallingup.
“It takes most people 3 or 4 goes, and you’ve got to put your tyres right down…it’s an absolute cracker” – Graham Cahill
The Three Bears Track is a combination of sand and limestone rocks. It’s not an overly difficult track if you have the correct gear, just don’t forget to pack your board and togs – it will take you past the incredible 3 bears surf break. You’re looking at about 2 hours to complete the full track but the scenery is definitely worth a few stops along the way. If you’re starting from the North, the track begins just out of Dunsborough and you’ll finish up near Yallingup. For the coordinates to Three Bears Track, click here.

Yeagerup
Second on Graham’s list is the Yeagerup Track. This trail also takes you to the coast, but is super remote and more of a challenge. It takes you across some incredible dunes, which cover an area of nearly 30 square kilometres. There’s only one way in and out, and the sand is pretty soft. According to Graham, “it takes most people 3 or 4 goes, and you’ve got to put your tyres right down…it’s an absolute cracker”.
If you’re up for the challenge, the Yeagerup track starts at Leaning Marri campsite in D’Entrecasteaux National Park. For the coordinates to the Yeagerup Dunes, click here. It can take anywhere between 40 minutes to an hour to reach the beach, where you will find plenty of soft patches and steep hill climbs. Just don’t forget your compressor!
Having the right tyre pressure is essential when it comes to dune driving, as is applying the right amount of throtttle. A quality throttle controller can do wonders for increasing your traction on sand, and here Justin from Patriot Campers gives you some guidance on why these powerful little upgrades are worth every cent…
Bobs Track
Next up on Graham’s top 4WDing spots south of Perth is Bob’s Track – a lesser known trail which takes you to the stunning Boranup beach. This route has quite a few rocky sections and can be a bit gnarly, so you’ll need a capable 4WD.
A round trip takes about an hour but Graham recommends spending a bit of time on the beach – its an amazing part of the coastline. The crystal clear water and the fishing make it well worth the visit. It’s one of those spots you need to try for yourself, and in Graham’s words- “when you do, you’ll come back time and time again.” The track starts just north of Bushby road in Karridale, click here for coordinates.
Remember, when 4WDing over rocky outcrops like on Bob’s Track, it pays to be aware of your under-body clearance and what kind of debris is kicking up under your vehicle. A tough, high clearance exhaust will give you extra peace of mind, and last the distance regardless of terrain or the elements. Added bonus- your 4WD will be running more efficiently so you may be able to eke some extra km’s out of the fuel tank, and of course enjoy a nice deep exhaust note along the way. It’s no secret that the team at 4WD 24/7 go hard off-road- check out the exhaust Shauno installed on his 200 Series, and see why it got the tick of approval…
Lake Jasper/ Black Point
Lastly, if you want to check out the largest freshwater lake in WA, Lake Jasper and more specifically Black Point, is definitely worth the journey. At Black Point you’ll find an incredible outcrop of basalt which was formed by volcanic lava flow millions of years ago.
“You’ll come back time and time again” – Graham Cahill
It’s a fairly easy track in but watch out for the deep bog holes in winter- Graham himself has been caught out a couple times. To really make it worthwhile, Graham recommends spending a night or two by Lake Jasper. It has an absolutely stunning camp spot, and is one of Graham’s favourite places in WA. This track is also located in the D’Entrecastaux National Park, and starts just out of Pemberton. For coordinates to D’Entrecastaux National Park, click here.
Once again, these tracks are only a small sample of what south WA has to offer but if Graham recommends them, you know they’re worth doing.
