Stainless Steel Snorkel
Give your vehicle access to cooler and cleaner air for optimum performance, while preventing engine damage from dust and water intake.
Torqit’s Stainless Steel Snorkel is a fully sealed, one-piece construction designed for maximum airflow and engine protection. Australian-designed and rigorously tested for tough Australian conditions.
A snorkel elevates the air intake point on your 4WD, improving the quality of air reaching your engine for improved performance, efficiency and potential fuel savings.
If you take your 4WD off-road in dusty conditions or tackle water crossings, think of a snorkel as an insurance policy. It reduces wear and tear by protecting your engine from water and dust, and means less maintenance and a longer lifespan for your vehicle.
Why choose Stainless Steel
Every Torqit Snorkel is mandrel bent from 304 grade stainless. Here’s why…
Created from a single pipe which is mandrel bent onsite at Torqit, the one-piece construction eliminates all joins and ensures every snorkel is completely sealed. Internally, the consistent diameter and minimal bends provide your vehicles engine with maximum airflow. Externally, the streamlined design minimises snagging on bushes when heading off-road.
Tried and tested in harsh Australian conditions, 304 grade stainless steel offers greater rigidity than plastic. It maintains its strength in extreme temperatures, without corroding or warping. An added bonus- a stainless steel snorkel gives your vehicle a unique look which stands out from the crowd.

Enhance Performance with a Custom Stainless-Steel Snorkel
Upgrading to a stainless-steel snorkel and airbox can significantly enhance your vehicle’s performance and provide some significant benefits, including:
- Improved horsepower and torque
- Elevated fuel efficiency
- Better sound
- Increased durability and longevity
- Aesthetic appeal
Factors to consider:
- Cost
Although enhanced performance and durability far outweigh other considerations for most enthusiasts, a custom stainless-steel snorkel can be more expensive. - Installation
Professional installation of a steel snorkel is recommended to ensure optimal performance and fitment unless you are a gifted amateur mechanic with the requisite tools. Luckily, the team at Torqit are past masters at automotive snorkel installation and will perform the job quickly, efficiently, and cost-effectively.

Comparing Aluminium and Stainless Snorkels
When comparing an aluminium and stainless-steel car snorkel, several factors enter the equation, including:
- Durability
Although aluminium is durable, it cannot match stainless steel’s strength and corrosion resistance. For off-road adventures on the roughest terrain, there is only one winner. - Weight
Stainless steel is heavier than aluminium, adding to the overall weight of your vehicle and decreasing fuel efficiency and power-to-weight ratio. - Cost
A stainless steel snorkel for a 4WD typically costs more than an aluminium one, but the cost is offset by its enhanced longevity. - Aesthetics
Although both materials look good, especially when polished, stainless steel has a high-end look that aluminium cannot match. - Installation and maintenance
An aluminium snorkel is easier to work with and install due to its lightness, but it will require more inspection and maintenance than a stainless snorkel. - Performance
A stainless-steel airflow snorkel is almost unrivalled in terms of performance. Although aluminium also performs well, it is not in the same league under extreme conditions.
Forward vs Rear-Facing Airflow Snorkel: The Best Snorkels for a 4WD
We repeatedly receive a question at Torqit: ‘Should I choose a forward or rear-facing vehicle snorkel?’ It’s a good question and one that sees debate rage in chatrooms and forums around the world. For the record, here’s how we view the differences at Torqit:
Forward-facing snorkels
Traditional thinking says a forward-facing snorkel for a 4WD is superior as air is forced into the system as the vehicle moves. However, this is a misconception. No amount of additional air can be taken in, no matter how much force it carries, as the vacuum section of the snorkel will not allow it. Forward-facing snorkels have three significant disadvantages, namely:
- The opening can catch branches and other objects as it passes, causing potential damage to the vehicle and airflow system or misaligning the snorkel.
- Although no more air can be drawn into the system, a forward-facing 4WD snorkel can (and does) draw in more water, dust, and debris than a rear-facing one. This reduces airflow and can block the filters, harming the vehicle’s performance if left uncleared.
- If the vehicle crosses deep water, the chance of unwanted water getting into the snorkel is vastly increased.
Rear-facing snorkels
Although some dust and particles will still be drawn into the system as it absorbs air, the buildup is reduced with rear-facing snorkels, as the vehicle’s forward motion does not naturally drive debris into the opening. Snagging issues are less likely, as most branches will brush off the surface with nothing to become hooked on. Deep water crossings are less problematic, as water cannot be driven into the open snorkel as the vehicle powers through.
Despite their opposite orientations, both a forward and rear-facing 4WD snorkel perform similarly in the real world. Some issues we’ve highlighted are unlikely to affect casual off-roaders or road users. Each individual must assess their needs and preferences to make a choice, and the experts at Torqit are more than happy to help.

Heading off-road?
A Torqit Stainless Steel Snorkel makes sure you’re prepared .
The Problem
A snorkel doesn’t just get you through deep water. For many vehicles the chief role of a snorkel is to draw in cleaner air when driving through dry, dusty environments. Picture yourself at the tail end of a convoy across the Simpson Desert, with clouds of dust and sand kicking up around the bonnet. Then picture these fine particles inside your engine, rubbing against and destroying components such as the pistons and cylinders- things that you’re relying on to keep your vehicle moving. Driving in these conditions can inflict havoc on your engine, plus impact the efficiency and life of the vehicle.
The Answer
A snorkel avoids this damage by stopping dust, water and other harmful particles from entering your airbox. This means cleaner and cooler air for improved engine performance and efficiency, plus potential fuel savings. After all, humans wear PPE to prevent us from inhaling harmful particles- a snorkel essentially provides the same protection for your engine. An added bonus- less dust in your airbox means cleaner air filters and reduced maintenance.
How It Works
The air intake on the majority of vehicles is under the bonnet or inside the wheel arch. By giving your vehicle a higher intake point, a 4WD snorkel works in the same way as a swimming snorkel- it lets the vehicle ‘breathe’. As the vehicle moves along or passes through water, clean air passes down through the snorkel’s mouth into the airbox. Since Torqit’s Stainless Steel Snorkel is a one-piece construction with no joins, it is completely sealed against dust and water leakage for complete peace of mind.
