Torqit ceramic-coated long tube performance header for 4WD

Performance Headers

Torqit’s Performance Headers  increase exhaust flow for a significant boost in power, sound, and efficiency, while reducing back pressure and engine temperatures.

Torqit’s Performance Headers are designed to build torque and horsepower throughout the entire rev-range and particularly in the mid to high RPM’s.

With a new set of Performance Headers and a Torqit exhaust system, your vehicle will produce a deep, aggressive note. By helping the engine breathe more freely, Torqit’s Headers reduce back pressure and improve exhaust flow, resulting in an overall boost in performance.

Ceramic Header Coating vs Header Wraps

Torqit’s Performance Headers are Fully Ceramic Coated. Here’s why.

Finished with a tough ceramic coating rated to 1000 degrees, Torqit’s Turbo X Ceramic Coating provides the most effective thermal barrier currently on the market. Designed for increased performance and durability, the coating extends the header lifespan by reducing temperatures and corrosion, without cracking or flaking.

In contrast, header wraps can result in costly damage when exposed to engine fluids and trapped moisture and heat. Ceramic coated headers are the number one option for long-term protection, performance, and maintaining a sleek finish.

Performance Headers Vs Factory Manifolds

Factory manifolds feed exhaust gases into one space- the most direct route out of the engine. This creates uneven engine pulses, as the flow from each cylinder has a different length to travel to the exhaust pipe. In contrast, Performance Headers have individual tubes for each cylinder, which improves engine efficiency by creating a more evenly balanced route for the exhaust gases to escape.

Made from cast iron, factory manifolds are prone to cracking. To reduce this risk, the walls are extremely thick- which in turn shrinks the space for exhaust gases to flow through. Combined with uneven walls from the iron casting, factory manifolds increase turbulence and back pressure. This means less fresh air for combustion, and as a result less power. In comparison, the thinner walls of Torqit’s Performance Headers provide a smooth, optimum diameter for unrestricted exhaust flow, without back pressure or stalling. This improves the air ratio, reduces engine strain, and increases overall vehicle performance.

Do Headers Increase Performance?

Increased power and performance is usually the main goal when it comes to installing headers. By increasing exhaust flow and reducing back pressure, headers will provide noticeable power gains.

Note installing headers on the Y62 Patrol deletes the primary cats, which can bring up 02 sensor warning lights. To avoid this, an ECU tune such as Torqit’s ModuleMap solution is required.

Will Headers Improve Fuel Economy?

For the majority of drivers, yes. The scavenging effect of headers improves the air to fuel mixture, meaning the engine can produce the same amount of power it did previously, but with less work. Fuel savings will be most noticeable when driving long distances at a constant speed, however this is dependent on driving behaviour. If the main reason for installing headers is to enhance performance, the vehicle may be driven a little harder to enjoy the effects and as a result use more fuel.

The Difference Between Headers & Extractors

In today’s context, the answer is none- headers and extractors are just two different ways of describing the same thing.

The old school term ‘extractor’ was originally used in Australia before the American term ‘header’ became the common name. So if you hear a mate talking about extractors, they simply haven’t adopted the American lingo- similar to the words bonnet/ hood and trunk/ boot.

Factors When Selecting the Best Performance Headers and Exhaust Systems

Choosing performance exhaust headers and systems can be a minefield for the uninitiated, so always contact Torqit if unsure. Generally, several factors should affect your choice, namely:

  • Quality of materials

Although premium materials tend to cost more, they represent a wise investment if you want the best performance from your vehicle. Great favourites in the customising community include ceramic-coated and stainless-steel headers. These are prized for their superb performance, durability, and extreme longevity.

  • Design and intended use

Typically, the primary choice is between long and short-tube exhaust headers. Each has different characteristics and advantages.Long-tube headers merge further away from the engine, are impressive in mid to high RPMs, and have a more aggressive tone. They lean towards performance driving but can be challenging to install due to their length and complex requirements.Short-tube headers merge closer to the engine and perform well in the low to mid-RPM range. This emphasises fuel efficiency over performance, and their exhaust note is subdued by comparison. Their compact nature also makes them easier to install. Spend time deciding on your preferences and choose the style that best suits your vehicle type and desired performance.

  • Compatibility

It is a simple, perhaps obvious note, but ensuring the exhaust headers fit your car’s exact model and engine is fundamental to success. Luckily, the Torqit team is ready to assist, so don’t be shy about getting in touch!

  • Compliance with emission standards

Meeting the legal state requirements for emissions is crucial if you want your vehicle to pass its next safety inspection.

  • Budget

Prices vary, especially when premium products and materials are involved, so research, set your budget and explore options that match.

Making an informed decision is the best way to ensure the right choice for your requirements and enjoy the significant benefits of performance headers and exhaust systems.

Step-by-Step Installation Guide for Headers and Exhaust Systems

When you want to install performance exhaust headers, these steps should be followed:

  • Research each component’s location and purpose, including the oxygen sensors, manifold, catalytic converter, resonator, muffler, and exhaust pipe.
  • Let the exhaust cool down if it has recently been driven.
  • Safely lift the vehicle using appropriate equipment and tools.
  • Remove the existing exhaust by disconnecting the bolts and any wires.
  • Position the new exhaust.
  • Install header flanges (metal plates that bolt directly to the engine or cylinder head), remembering to include the gasket between the flange and the engine for a tight seal.
  • Align the new components carefully with the downpipe (that leads to the engine), and then secure them tightly.
  • Check the entire length of the system for leaks.
  • Further tighten any clamps and bolts as required.

FAQs

How do performance exhaust headers improve my vehicle's performance?

In partnership with other premium upgrades like Torqit’s Power Module Plus or ModuleMap, exhaust headers are a cornerstone of any vehicle enhancement in the following ways:

  • Horsepower

By efficiently reducing back pressure and optimising the flow of gases through the system, the best exhaust headers can provide between five and twenty more hp in most cars.

  • Sound

High-performance headers create a more aggressive, deeper tone from the exhaust.

  • Efficiency

Typically, the system becomes more efficient when the stock manifolds are replaced by individual tubes that connect directly to the cylinders. This is a feature of all premium exhaust headers in Australia, and when combined with other improvements, such as Torqit’s Pedal Torq throttle controllers, the results can be impressive!

Are the best exhaust headers worth the investment?

When we explore the pros and cons of performance headers and exhaust systems, the decision comes down to one fundamental principle, namely:

  • Cost/time vs reward

Although advanced headers and other performance exhaust components represent a higher investment due to the premium materials and complex manufacturing process, almost all dedicated car enthusiasts consider the vehicle’s boosted performance worth the time and money.
